Supermicro® OSNEXUS Software-Defined Storage Solution

Thanks to more demanding software, every business’s data is getting progressively larger, driven by performant hardware. Therefore, administrators and business owners are panicking about storage solutions. Even low-cost cloud-based solutions now impact the profitability of a company.

As you are well aware, data costs money no matter where it's stored. If information is onsite, storage needs to be powered up, maintained and components periodically replaced. These costs are reduced through economies of scale for cloud solutions, but you're charged when scaling projects.

Your only option is to streamline the management process. Failure to do so in a competitive marketplace may lead your company to high costs or even bankruptcy. Thankfully, Supermicro's OSNEXUS software-defined storage solution can help you. Implementing software-defined storage solutions to your business can yield the following benefits:

  • Faster Deployment.
  • Easier Management.
  • Lower Operation costs.

What is a Software-Defined Storage Solution?

When a business decides to improve its infrastructure, the initial thought is to throw all the servers out and start from scratch. Software-defined storage solutions enable you to aggregate your existing storage and create a global namespace for any number of volumes you wish to make. You can also create storage blocks based on an abstraction layer. You will find that these types of solutions allow you to roll out a new system much faster than you would expect. This is the case because you may be leveraging your existing hardware and only need to install the software. All data management is centralized and allows cross-disciplinary teams to check and make changes. In addition, routine maintenance tasks are expedited thanks to this centralized approach.

Storage Grid Technology

One of the main benefits of OSNEXUS's software-defined data storage is that it enables you to use existing infrastructure. You can combine both public and private solutions that are onsite or remote. This feature is powerful for multisite organizations and businesses starting to grow. In addition, the QuantaStor storage grid makes it easy to aggregate storage from many different vendors. In essence, QuantaStor is added to each server using an ISO. This measure creates a unified environment called the grid. Once standardized protocols have been added, you can combine them with newly created storage pools. The best part is you can control everything from a centralized management tool. So no more multiple windows or repeating repetitive maintenance tasks. In addition, QuantaStor SDS helps provide certified hardware configurations across platforms. The QuantaStor storage grid can scale to 100 platforms. In addition, independent storage clusters and HA failover is also easily achieved.

Ceph Technology

QuantaStor creates data pools that can be added and managed on the grid. QuantaStor uses Ceph storage technology to achieve this in a user-friendly approach. Ceph is also used as an abstraction layer that enables you then to make blocks and works as a filesystem. This system component has a vast community that will allow it to be supported and extended for decades. Ceph technology has many desirable features, including automatic bit-rot detection. In addition, the system periodically runs checks over volumes and blocks. Data compression is enabled on all storage pools out of the box to maximize data storage. Also included are de-facto standard data scrubbing operations, these include:

  • 4-pass DoD 5220 22-M section 8-306 procedure
  • 4-pass NNSA Policy Letter NAP-14.1-C procedure
  • US Army AR380-19 method.

For those using Docker containers, OSNEXUS has created an open-source QuantaStor plugin for Flocker. This plugin provides fast, local, and persistent data for containers and helps with project-related operations.

S3 Storage and Hyper scaling

Hyperscaling is critical for implementing projects fast without paying excessively for storage. Furthermore, as projects change over time, this process needs to happen quickly. To stop teams from waiting on their solution and holding up business workflows, the S3 protocol is used. Ceph is supported for:

  • Object S3 based storage.
  • RBD and iSCSI block storage.

When QuantaStor is implemented on appliances, it automatically creates S3 object gateways. This enables clusters environments to be created and extended easily. You can do this through the web-based interface, CLI or REST APIs. System and appliance monitoring can be done through:

  • SNMP
  • Email
  • Slack
  • PagerDuty

Encryption and Security

One of the exciting features of QuantaStor is its role-based security controls (RBAC). This data management tool ensures your users only have access to parts of the business they need to. By using RBAC, you can help protect your business’s intellectual property. It also enables you to secure aspects of the business during staff turnaround events effectively. Without RBAC, you're putting your business at risk from internal and external security threats. You can also create and manage user groups that can be applied quickly to multiple cloud grids. This bonus makes managing a team a simple, less repetitive task. No more group miss matches between projects or storage silos. QuantaStor supports target or volume Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP). You can modify default CHAP settings at the User and Resource Group level. In addition, it ensures that as storage volumes are added to a resource group, they're protected according to policy settings. This feature is very handy for multi-platform environments. To help secure your vast digital empire, you need encryption. QuantaStor provides network security through:

  • SSL/TLS
  • HTTP
  • SMB3 with encryption
  • IPSec with encryption
  • ISCI with CHAP authentication

Data at rest encryption is also provided for hardware that is FIPS 140-2 certified with qualified SED hardware. AE256 software encryption for SAS, SATA, SSD, and NVMe is also used. This is accelerated through Intel AES-NI support.

QuantaStor Supermicro OSNEXUS

QuantaStor extends the capabilities of file systems providing businesses with more ways to leverage their OpenStack solution. The storage grid produced is not limited to where hardware is located or whether it is public or private. Additionally, with the potential of adding up to 100 appliances, Supermicro’s offering is highly scalable. QuantaStor supports clustering and roles out S3 gateways to help create and expand these as needed. This facility enables you to construct fast parallel HA failover or improve service provisioning to users. Here software-driven storage can help deliver zero downtime policies. Excellent data management is provided, enabling data control through roles, teams, and groups. With independent groups, you can apply and manage them across platforms on the grid. This aspect can benefit companies that unify their databases or use NoSQL. However, centralization can make a company more susceptible to malware and exploitation. Here restricting access to users, teams and groups can help mitigate this. Supermicro's OSNEXUS software-defined storage solution provides your organization with robust security. Not only are connections encrypted, but you can also secure storage devices.

AE256 software encryption for SAS, SATA, SSD, and NVMe is also used. This is accelerated through Intel AES-NI support.

OpenStack Integration

You can fully integrate QuantaStor's object storage with OpenStack. To do this, you add it as a Swift end-point to the Keystone OpenStack Identity Service. Doing this enables OpenStack to use both image data and metadata.
