A Rack-Scale Total Solution Built on Open Standards
Supermicro RSD, a rack-scale total solution, empowers cloud service providers, telecom operators, and Fortune 500 companies to build their own agile, efficient, software-defined data centers. Built on industry-standard Redfish APIs and the open-source Intel Rack Scale Design framework, Supermicro RSD runs on Supermicro server, storage, and switch hardware to maximize utilization through disaggregating compute, network, and storage resources distributed within a rack or across multiple racks.
Open REST API-Based Management: Provides interoperability and scalability in cloud-scale infrastructure by treating the rack as the new management unit via Redfish.
Resource Pooling & Just-in-Time Allocation: Dynamically pools compute, network, and storage resources to maximize utilization and TCO savings.
Future-Proof Hardware Support: Runs on existing X10 and new X11 generation servers and storage, protecting prior investments and offering disaggregated compute modules.
Additional Capabilities
Deep rack discovery of compute, storage, and network building blocks
Integrated cooling and power management at rack level
Comprehensive asset monitoring and provisioning
Software Components
Pod Manager (PodM): Aggregates resources across multiple racks (Pods) via Redfish, managing and pooling hardware from the PSMEs and RMMs.
Rack Management Module (RMM): Monitors and controls power & thermal resources within each rack, reporting status to Pod Manager.
Pooled System Management Engine (PSME): Manages individual chassis/drawers, aggregates telemetry and asset data via Redfish to Pod Manager.
Web UI: Browser-based interface for streamlined RSD management and monitoring.
All components are packaged in a 1U Supermicro management appliance, each running in its own container. A software-only RSD package is also available for deployment on existing compute nodes.
Hardware Requirements
Supermicro RSD runs on all existing X10 and new X11 generation servers and storage. A minimal RSD rack requires:
1U Management Appliance: SYS-5019S-TN4-SRSMGT running the RSD containers.
Management Switch: 1G switch for BMC connectivity.
Data Switch: One high-performance data switch.
Compute Nodes: Choose from TwinPro®, BigTwin®, FatTwin®, or MicroBlade® architectures.
Storage Nodes: Options include 2U Ultra with 24 NVMe SSDs, 2U SSG with SAS HDDs, or 60/90-bay JBOD for cold storage.
With Supermicro RSD 2.1, up to 12 application hosts can share a pooled NVMe storage chassis (SSG-136R-N32JB), supporting 32 hot-swap NVMe SSDs in just 2U for petabyte-scale performance.
Ordering & SKUs
Choose from two main paths when ordering Supermicro RSD:
For software-only deployments, order SFT-SMCI-RSDSM and leverage your existing Supermicro servers, storage, and switches. Add other components on-demand to build the optimal RSD rack for your environment.
